ESKOM’S head of generation Bheki Nxumalo says they are taking all necessary action to protect the grid from collapsing.

He said there was a two-year recovery plan and if it was implemented by Eskom the energy availability factor would increase to 65% by the end of March next year and reach 70% by 2025.

Eskom board chairperson Mpho Makwana expressed the same view that they wanted to increase the energy availability factor and that it would ensure energy reliability.

Members of the standing committee on public accounts (Scopa) wanted assurance from Eskom about what measures were being taken to prevent the collapse of the grid after mounting speculation in recent times.

Eskom’s head of transmission, Segomoco Scheppers, said they would do everything to prevent a collapse of the grid.

“The pain of load shedding reduces demand to match the available supply. But we are working to balance that every second of the day. Our task is to avoid that.

“It may mean higher stages of load shedding if we can’t avoid it,” said Scheppers. |
