Bid to save Lebanese army from collapse
PARIS: World powers will seek to raise tens of millions of dollars in emergency aid for the Lebanese army at a meeting today, aiming to prevent the military from collapsing as the country’s economic and political crisis worsens, a French official said.
Paris, which has led aid efforts to its former colony, has sought to ramp up pressure on Lebanon’s squabbling politicians, after failed attempts to rally them to agree a new government and launch reforms to unlock foreign cash.
Discontent is brewing among Lebanon’s security forces over a currency crash that has wiped out most of the value of their salaries. |
