Gynaecologist accused of raping patient on the run

of rooms at Louis Pasteur as well as Mediclinic Medforum, where the doctor who hired the gynaecologist also worked.

The woman, who cannot be named due to the nature of the alleged crime, arrived at Louis Pasteur on a Thursday afternoon. It is alleged that the doctor, whose name has been withheld, told her to move to another space and fully undress.

Charges have been laid against the doctor, who is believed to be on the run.

The secretary-general of #Notinmyname, Themba Masango, said: “The gynaecologist has been hired by another doctor to check on his clients. So the plan is to close both surgeries, because how many women are being raped by this man masquerading as a specialist?”

Masango said that after learning of the incident, they approached the doctor who hired the gynaecologist.

“When we asked him for the alleged perpetrator’s credentials, he admitted to not having anything on him.

“We asked for the practice number, only to be told there was none,” he said.

Masango said the Health Professions Council of South Africa confirmed that the gynaecologist was not registered with the entity.

“We also learned that he previously worked at Pretoria West Hospital. We went there and were told they, too, were looking for him because he had allegedly raped a patient at that hospital and had been on the run since the incident was reported more than a year ago.”

Masango said the reason they protested at Louis Pasteur was to send a message that the management could not “afford to have a person bringing down the hospital’s reputation and that of other good doctors”.

“Neither can we afford to have our sisters, our mothers being under so much attack … Why must they be scared in hospital and on the streets?”

Yesterday afternoon, the hospitals’ management were in a meeting with #Notinmyname. The outcome was not known at the time of publication.

The Gauteng Department of Heath did not respond to questions on the incident at Pretoria West Hospital.

The doctor who hired the gynaecologist could not be reached for comment.
