Cities to receive R14.6bn from fuel levy revenue

FINANCE Minister Tito Mboweni has allocated the country’s eight major cities over R14.6 billion in general fuel levy revenue to build and maintain their roads.

The allocation to metropolitan municipalities for 2021/22 is over R590 million more than the previous financial year. In 2020/21, the eight municipalities shared just over R14bn.

More than R3.9bn – the biggest share of this financial year’s allocation – will go to the City of Johannesburg, up from just under R3.7bn last year.

ethekwini will receive just above R3bn compared to over R2.85bn in 2020/21, while the City of Cape

Town’s share is over R2.6bn (R2.59bn last year).

According to the allocations released in a notice from the National Treasury this week, Ekurhuleni will get more than R1.82bn, up from R1.78bn last year, while the City of Tshwane’s R1.56bn for 2021/22 increased from R1.49bn in 2020/21.

Free State will receive R652m and R332m, respectively, which is up from R593m and R320m in the previous financial year for both municipalities.

Nelson Mandela Bay, also in the Eastern Cape, is the only metropolitan municipality whose allocation has been reduced, from R707m last year to R701.5m in the previous financial year.
